Tuscany, Italy: Tips For Your First Bike Trip

CYCLE THE ROLLING HILLS OF TUSCANY LIKE A PRO

“Are you ok?,” I heard from behind as I picked myself up out of a ditch. While I expected to find myself here when I joined a bike trip - I’m a terrible cyclist with minimal balance - it certainly wasn’t for the reason I thought. I’d stopped to take a photo of the impossibly beautiful vista of Tuscany and, distracted by the view, stepped off my bike right into said ditch. Smooth.

My ego bruised more than anything else, I snapped a few pics and got back on the bike, questioning how often I’d be greeting the Tuscan countryside quite so closely. It was the first day of Intrepid’s Cycle Tuscany trip and my poor bike riding skills were showing.

Luckily, this little tumble turned out to be a fluke. With the best bike I’ve ever ridden and oh-so-helpful guides, I ended up staying upright AND actually enjoying cycling. Along the way, I learned a few things that would surely make any other novice cyclist’s (or novice cycle-tripper’s) life just a wee bit easier. Key among these are how to use your gears appropriately to beat those uphills and, most importantly, to eat all the carbs.
